Chapter Seven

Shane fought the urge to take Bekah’s hand as they strode toward her pack’s headquarters, and he focused on the scenery instead. As they crossed the street, the small, brightly-colored cottages gave way to two- and three-story buildings in shades of beige, yellow, and blue. Potted plants adorned the wrought-iron-trimmed galleries, and colorful beads and purple-and-green wreaths added to the embellishments.

She followed his gaze toward a lavishly decorated balcony. “It’ll be Mardi Gras soon.”

He smiled, but her lips merely twitched in return. She was holding back, and he honestly couldn’t blame her. She had explained the details of their relationship, and as the blanks were filled in, he realized his mistake.

What kind of wanker tells a woman his wolf has claimed her after one date?

The kind who doesn’t remember they’ve only had one date.

He’d overwhelmed her, and he was lucky she’d offered to help him at all. As much as he needed to take her in his arms and make the woman his, he’d dial it back. Give her time to process. Her wolf was dormant, so she might not even feel the strong connection tethering his heart to hers.

She would eventually, and he could wait.

“This is it.” She pointed to a dark blue building nestled between two taller structures. A wooden sign above the door read O’Malley’s Pub, and a curtain of cool air blasted his skin from above as he followed her inside.

Shaded lights hung from exposed wood beams, and a woman with light-brown hair and bright blue eyes stood behind the bar. She slid the drink she was mixing to a patron and nodded a hello. “Luke and Chase are in the office waiting for you. Head on back.”

“Thanks, Amber.” Bekah motioned for him to follow and padded toward a side door that had a cardboard sign with Employees and Werewolves Only written in black marker.

Shane paused and scratched his head. He may not remember much about his own life, but there was no way the existence of werewolves was out in the open, even in New Orleans. “Is this…?”

Bekah stepped through the door and held it open. “It’s a joke. Human customers used to say the old alpha looked like a wolfman, so he went with it.”

“I see. What happened to him?” He followed her down a short set of stone steps and through the brick-lined corridor, wracking his brain for a memory of his own alpha—or at least his pack or his family. He found nothing but a void where his memories should have been.

She paused outside an office door and squeezed his hand. “He retired, and his son took over. We’re a peaceful pack. Don’t worry.”

Another sliver of memory from his night with Bekah crept into his mind. “And your brother is his second?”

Her eyes brightened with her smile. “You’re remembering.”

“Only because it has to do with you.”

“It’s a start.” She dropped his hand and smoothed her hair from her face before knocking on the door.

“It’s open,” a man called from inside.

Shane straightened his spine and strode through the door, refusing to let the alpha see how lost he felt.
